Coastlands Community Centre launches an affordable food market and free home budget course

Established in September 2018, Coastlands Community Centre in Brighton SA, is becoming a thriving hub as its local Church community have been working to deliver their engagement initiative known as the Coastlands Community Care program. The program aims to help develop people’s life-skills, deliver food care programs and establish connection points, whereby volunteers arrange events, courses or services that can help the community to flourish.

Two new programs have officially launched just in time for National Neighbourhood House Week 2019, with ‘The Pantry’ and the ‘CAP Money Course’ now added to the growing Community Centre calendar.

The Pantry is a budget friendly food market to promote affordable food, essential care and nutrition. It officially opens on Wednesday 1st May as a place to shop for food, share recipes and have meaningful conversations. The market is sustained through donated groceries and by working with suppliers who can help keep the prices low for the benefit of Pantry Members.

Pantry volunteer, Helen Carey said, “As the cost of living is rises in Australia, it’s understandable that people are looking for ways to make their budget go further,” she said, “The Pantry is here to help out with the food budget and create an important community connection point, we’re excited to officially open to the public.”

The CAP Money Course is designed to teach people how to take control of their finances and is delivered over four sessions. The original course was developed by the organisation Christians Against Poverty (CAP), and is coordinated through partnerships with churches. It is so highly regarded that participants can become eligible for recognised debt relief programs. Registrations for the next CAP Money Course are officially open with the next course commencing on Tuesday 4th June.

Course Facilitator, Andrew Hill said, “15 participants attended the pilot course. One participant said that they now ‘felt confident to get on top of debt’ and that’s what we are here for.”

Neighbourhood House Week 2019 (May 6th to 12th) is a nationwide initiative to celebrate the role of Neighbourhood Centres, Family Centres, Community Centres, Community Resource Centres and Learning Centres. This year’s theme is ‘Bringing People Together’.

Church Pastor and Director of Coastlands Community Care, Ben Whittaker said, “The church is passionate about building strong communities,” he said, “Coastlands Community Care is our response to needs in our community and just one of many ways we bring people together.”
